Distribution software specialist, EDP, has implemented a new business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system to improve communications between its offices across the UK.

EDP’s head of IT, Chris Spicer, said that the new system was needed because the quality of communications made via the organisation’s previous business phone systems was ‘awful’.

IP telephony is one of the top two most common technological enhancements adopted by utility companies across Western Europe, a new survey has revealed.

The survey, by specialist energy marketing research organisation, IDC Energy Insights, reveals that along with cloud computing, IP (internet protocol) telephony is currently being taken up by over 50% of Western European utilities.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has pledged to help develop high speed broadband within its jurisdiction, by agreeing to invest £475,000 in a proposed cabling infrastructure scheme.

The expanding ‘new town’ of Milton Keynes is to benefit from a broadening of the town’s high speed broadband cable network, planned for completion by the end of 2012

The high speed network, which is run by the UK’s main telecommunications infrastructure provider, BT, currently services 11,000 businesses and homes in the town. BT’s planned expansion of its network is expected to result in an additional 20,000 homes and businesses being able to access high speed broadband signals.
