An influential new study has predicted that the market for business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) in the US is likely to expand considerably between now and 2018.

The study, carried out by independent analyst organisation, IBISWorld updates a previous US VoIP market report which was carried out by the company at an earlier date.

According to the report, the growing popularity of VoIP and internet protocol (IP) telephony within the US business sector will owe much to the greater degree of cost effectiveness afforded in the deployment of these technologies when compared with that of installing conventional landline-based business phone systems.

The report also points to the trust and reliability of IP telephony as an additional and significant factor in incentivising US enterprises to adopt business VoIP solutions.

IBISWorld forecasts that in addition to an increase in VoIP and IP telephony take-up by the US business sector, consumers in the US will also be more likely to adopt these technologies.

The increasing interest in VoIP and IP telephony which the report identifies among US businesses matches that found in many other studies carried out in the US, Europe and across the globe.

The cost-effectiveness of these technologies has been further enhanced by the availability of facilities which enable both smaller and less financially endowed enterprises to participate in the IP telephony revolution.

These facilities include session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking technologies – whereby existing conventional landline-based phone exchanges can be adapted to send and receive IP telephony signals without the need for costly wholesale component replacement.

They also include one avenue for accessing IP telephony which has been particularly seized upon by many small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – that offered through the cloud by third party host business VoIP provider and VoIP reseller companies.

Hosted IP telephony services also usually have the further advantage of offering round-the-clock technical assistance included in the price.
