New report: Government broadband targets will not be met

A new report from the London School of Economics (LSE) has suggested that the broadband targets set by the government are unlikely to be achieved, following a £1.1 billion funding shortfall.
The government’s initial target for broadband is to see the whole country having access to fast broadband services by 2015. Another target wants to see 90% access to superfast broadband.

Following the successful transition of its traditional business phone systems to VoIP, a firm based in Deeside is urging other small businesses in the UK to make the switch. The move to the system, which the telecoms company iData completed in September 2011, has realised monthly savings of over £100. Proving that it is a cost-effective tool for businesses to use, the company has said that many other organisations could also benefit from moving their systems.

The market for wireless LAN on a global scale is at an all-time high, with the last quarter of 2011 showing that corporate spending hit $893 million. That is according to data supplied by the Infonetics Research company. Skype set for new jobs in London

There was news in early April that Skype, the popular residential IP telephony provider, is due to expand its operations, with about 400 new staff being taken on. The Microsoft-owned business will initially focus its efforts on two key European bases, according to a BBC report, in Stockholm and the UK capital. It will later create new posts in Prague in Czech Republic, Tallinn in Estonia as well as back in the US in the digital heartland of Palo Alto in California.

A recent report has called on the Scottish and UK governments to invest more into the infrastructure of high-speed broadband in the country, to ensure businesses and home users are not disadvantaged. BT has announced that nearly 9,000 residential and commercial premises in Wiltshire are now receiving faster broadband connectivity. The announcement comes after the towns and villages of Downton, Hawthorn and Wilton have been connected to the latest generation of telecommunications technology. UK Internet largest share of economy in G20

A new report has identified the UK as benefitting the most from the internet as a proportion of the country’s overall economy than any other member of the G20. The report, by the Boston Consulting Group (BGC), reveals that in 2010 the internet contributed £121 billion to the economy of the UK; a figure which amounts to 8.3% of the total economy, or £2,000 for each member of the population.
