Inadequate broadband provision identified as obstacle by small businesses

The non-availability of superfast broadband has been identified as a factor inhibiting growth by a significant number of small businesses.
The finding has emerged via a recent survey carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) among 11,000 of its members.
In the survey, 16% of small business representatives said they felt that their company’s lack of broadband capability was preventing it from achieving its commercial goals.

UK telecommunications infrastructure giant, BT, has indicated that it is now likely to reduce its original commitment to provide 25% of UK premises with fibre-optic broadband capability by 2014; favouring instead a policy of offering high-speed broadband connections to the premises of those wishing to pay for the facility. What will essentially be a new ‘fibre on demand’ offering from BT is expected to be put in place from spring next year. The cost per installation is likely to be up to £1,000; and is expected by both BT and independent commentators to be most likely to appeal to small businesses.

The Scottish government has outlined plans for high speed broadband investment which could see significant benefits, including increased potential for business VoIP (voice over internet protocol), by 2015. The specially titled ‘Infrastructure Action Plan’ has at its ultimate aim the establishment of ‘world-class digital access’ for the whole of Scotland by 2020. However, the plan also involves a ‘step change’ for the country by 2015, whereby the availability of speeds of between 40 and 80 Mbps is intended for up to 90% of all premises; together with a general improvement in overall speeds for remaining premises.

Distribution software specialist, EDP, has implemented a new business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system to improve communications between its offices across the UK. EDP’s head of IT, Chris Spicer, said that the new system was needed because the quality of communications made via the organisation’s previous business phone systems was ‘awful’.
